Safe Crossing by Woodlands Secondary School

provide access to a safe means of crossing Northwell Drive by Woodlands Secondary School.

Woodlands has over 230 students in attendance with various physical and cognitive needs. The school prides its self on offering a variety of opportunities for students to access the community via walking or accessing further abroad via the bus system. They are fortunate to enjoy access to a bus stop directly opposite the site, but have no safe means for students to cross.

Some students have mobility issues that make walking challenging, and movements more slow and deliberate, because of this staff are often forced to station themselves in the road becoming a human crash barrier to protect the well of the students. The need to cross in a timely manner can also cause nervous students to run across the road, leaving them at greater risk of tripping and coming to harm.

Atleast 64 students will be dropped off and picked up by parents or careers, this includes parents walking and/or having to use public transport , having to cross Northwell Drive at it's busiest times of day.

A safe crossing would also be beneficial for those that live in the Bramingham View area off Lygetun Drive when they access public transport, especially the elderly, parents with small children and/or prams, and those with disabilities, and would also take some of the strain off of the zebra crossing by Lea Manor, as students coming from Limbury and the bottom end of Marsh Farm could safely cross sooner.

Despite there being an underpass by the school, there is no direct path enabling Woodlands students to access it, and it is a known hangout for local youths who could impede the safety of the Woodlands students. As seen in the case of the zebra crossing by Lea Manor and the Purley Centre, young students accessing school seem to prefer the safety of a zebra crossing over the seclusion of an underpass that could present dangers that are not easily spotted.
