Dangerous Junction

We the undersigned petition the Council to immediately place "Dangerous Junction" signs at the junction of Hucklesby Way/Church Street/Hitchin Road/Crescent Road.

The traffic lights are ineffective in controlling the traffic correctly and there is an unacceptable level of collisions, some with injuries.

We ask for a full review of the junction, and ideally a roundabout replaces the traffic lights.  in the interim, the dangerous junction sign is placed at all approaches to the junction.

Copied from one of my previous emails to Hazel Simmons:

This road junction is nothing short of a death trap, and something must be done.  The road junction and poor traffic management is causing collisions on virtually a daily basis, with one serious accident the other day where yet again ambulances were in attendance.

Traffic comes fast down this road from all directions and the traffic lights have poor management or traffic flow with many cars heading up to Hitchin Rd being confronted by cars coming down Hitchin Rd turning into Hucklesby Way on a green light when the upcoming lights change to green.  This causes collisions on a regular basis and all cars turning right take a risk due to the poor road layout.

I would strongly urge that some immediate attention is given to the risks at this junction and a plan is made to improve the safety for the road users from all wards which cross this junction before more people are injured or even killed here.

I have suggested previously that a roundabout, or mini roundabout would be a safer option and given the number of accidents would recommend something like this ( as has been done in other parts of Luton recently).

The staggering of the lights for traffic coming down Hitchin Rd has done nothing to improve the situation and has probably made things worse, with traffic turning right, cutting across cars aiming to travel straight up Hitchin Rd.

Drivers are also distracted on a number of occasions by what appears to be a Romanian Beggar at the lights, which I have also written to Hazel Simmons and Rachel Hopkins about.  Nobody had the courtesy to even respond apart from a casual email from Rachel asking how I got on some weeks later.   NOT A SINGLE RESPONSE FROM THE COUNCIL.

This petition has been reviewed and the following response has been offered:

Outcome of Petitions & Representations Board Meeting held on 30 September 2024

RE: Signalised junction of Hucklesby Way, Hitchin Road, Crescent Road, Luton

After considering the report submitted by council officers in response to the petition, and the oral representations made on behalf of the petitioners, the Petitions & Representations Board resolved that the proposal for the MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) traffic-controlled system to be installed with an all-red phasing as soon as possible and that the junction be monitored over a two-year period rather than the proposed three to five years as well as a report be brought back to the Board to provide an update on how the junction functioned following the introduction of the changes.

They also resolved that the Council enter into early discussions with town centre developers, such as Luton Town Football Club and the Stage, regarding a long-term solution, progress and works undertaken to the junction at a time when that scheme commences.

Kind regards

Nuzhat Uddin
